August 2017 Favorites
Maybe this isn't the correct way to start out a post on a blog called "cheerful" ... but I do not enjoy August and I'm so glad it's over! August is always extremely hot, all the kids go back to school [traffic, ugh], and it just seems like it drags on forever! I'm never sad to see it go. August 2017 has been particularly busy with things that were not fun, so I'm now just living on the anticipation of Fall and all its glory!
Nevertheless, I always find something to love! Let's get into it....
Augustus the Cat
Sometimes, unexpected things can be good!
A couple week ago, having another pet in my life was the last thing on my mind. Really, I wish I could save ALL the dogs and cats of the world, but there is really only a level of craziness that I can handle. Since we adopted Molly from Petsmart in June, I have seriously had my hands full, trying to get her properly trained [which has proved quite difficult!], while my husband has been working long hours every week. It's just been a lot of animal at one time.
But one hot August evening, this little kitten arrived in our backyard and chose us to be its family. Molly the pup had just pulled me down into the mud while trying to run on her leash [classic Molly], and when I went to stand up, Augustus just appeared out of nowhere. He came right to me and the pups, meowing and wanting petted. I petted him, but then put him back down, thinking he would run off. But, he didn't. He followed us to the stairs, on the porch, and came right inside behind the pups. [this story is abbreviated, but we would be here all night!]
I tried to find the owners, I tried to give it away to a loving home, Travis had a terrible allergic reaction the first morning - but really, after a couple of days, all of us were attached on some level and we knew it was over. This was only confirmed when I took him to the vet for his first shots and neuter scheduling and they diagnosed him with a very pronounced heart murmur. Obviously without a ton of risk and money, there is nothing that can be done. So he is on blood pressure pills for the rest of his little days. He could make it a long time, or he could not, only time will really tell. Either way, this is his forever family [awww!].
Gus likes to be held and cuddled. He meows for me to pick him up, and then he puts a couple little licks on my cheek. He runs under my feet constantly when I'm walking around the house, and generally drives the dogs nuts with his playful actions. Not a day goes by where they are not all chasing each other around the house. Yes, did I mention it was a zoo around here?
Gus has definitely been the highlight of my August!
My favorite shows and movies of life are period dramas [specifically romantic period dramas, really, but I'll take what I can get]. I'm so glad I decided to watch the new series on Amazon Prime, The Last Tycoon! I watched the entire season in 2 days because I couldn't stop, I had to know what happened!
Starring the delicious Matt Bomer, and the beautiful Lily Collins, the whole plot centers around a genius 1930s movie producer golden child named Monroe Stahr [who could very well be based upon the very real Irving Thalberg] who is a hero of sorts. Monroe is a complex man, juggling grief, redemption, love, self-actualization, and basically the entire family of his movie mogul and owner boss, Mr. Brady [played by Kelsey Grammer]. All the characters are great, and I enjoyed all the acting!
There's everything in this series - romance, scandal, intrigue and as much history and beautiful portrayal of 1930 glamour as you would ever care to see! The series is partially based on F. Scott Fitzgerald's unfinished novel of the same name, which adds credit to the complexity of Monroe's character. I loved this show and cannot wait for them to renew it for season 2, so I can anticipate its return!
This is an adult show with a few serious scenes of adult content, just fair warning!
My dearest best friend forever and ever bought this beautiful eyeshadow palette for me for my birthday! It is the popular Sweet Peach Palette by Too Faced. She knew I had been oogling this thing for over a year now, but I'd always hesitated to pull the trigger. One, because I'm drowning in eyeshadow palettes already [serious addiction level], and two, because I was afraid I already owned a lot of these colors in my collection. BUT, the second we opened this up and swatched it - it was every bit as beautiful and unique as I dreamed it was!
As evidenced as the name, the colors of the palette reflect the tones of peaches, and it even has peach extract in the shadows and SMELLS LIKE PEACHES. [Well, more like peach ring candies, but it's still scrumptious!]
My favorite shadows are caramelized, nectar, peach pit and summer yum. The only two I don't really appreciate because of consistency issues is Talk Derby To Me and Tempting. I was also not impressed with Bless Her Heart, which I wish was a much more true green instead of what it is, which blends out gray [ew].
I am so grateful that she bought this for me. Having people know you so well that they already know what you want ... there's not much better of a feeling than that. Truly a best friend! :)
This was an impulse buy, but I was pleasantly surprised! I found a few of these Coty Airspun finely milled face powders at Walgreens on sale, and decided to spring for one. It comes in a few different opaque shades [beige and suntan come to mind], but I picked the translucent with extra coverage. I believe I chose well!
I have been using it to set my dewier foundations and it really does extend the life of my foundation coverage and keeps my face from melting down so terribly during these hot days. The powder is silky smooth, and I use a powder brush to apply it, and it does not cake on. The packaging actually comes with an old school cottony puff, but I've already thrown it away - not sure how anyone could use that and get even coverage!
I can see why Youtuber beauty reviewers are always mentioning this as a great value drugstore powder - it is worth trying out if you're into this sort of thing!
And the makeup list rolls on ... I think I've mentioned her about fifty times now, but one of my favorite beauty reviewers, EmilyNoel83, swears by this mascara. It is so hard for me to find mascaras that do not transfer to my lid or below my eye because of my squinty eyes. I have tried so many, but I decided to finally try the CoverGirl Clump Crusher out. At first glance of the wand, I was thought, "there is no way this is going to volumize my lashes in any way", and felt like I'd made a mistake.
But surprise! It works wonders on my stubby, sparse lashes!
I do use this in conjunction with Loreal Voluminous Lash Primer to give my lashes even more length and volume. It stays on all day, no transfer, and no flakes at all!
Full transparency - I bought Loreal Lash Paradise to try out also, and the Covergirl Clump Crusher was far superior to me! I can see this mascara becoming a staple!
I have been using the Italian Sweet Cream Coffeemate creamer now for many moons, and it was time for a change! I really wanted pumpkin spice, but I've found that I love it more in theory than I do every time I decide to have a cup. So, I chose the Caramel Macchiato flavor and crossed my fingers....
YOU GUYS. It's delicious! Smooth, caramel-y, and doesn't require a ton to flavor my dark roast. I love it and will be using it -- until it's appropriate to drink peppermint mocha every day! :)
Because I obviously cannot help the anticipation, I'm already preparing for cooler weather. And while doing some online window shopping, I fell IN LOVE with this sweater off my favorite plus size women's store, Torrid. So in honor of my birthday, I went ahead and ordered it!
I just received it the other day, and it's as nice as expected! The material is soft and not itchy, which is what I have found is usually the worst problem with these "open knit" type sweaters. It's stretchy enough to be forgiving, but does not look dumpy. I am very excited to wear it, and I hope it's sooner than later!
If you're a bigger girl and you've never shopped at Torrid, they are super trendy and although you have to be viligant for sales, they always have new items going in and out online and in store. Check them out!
What, no picture?!?! I know, I know. But I got this beautiful planner for my birthday, and I feel like it needs its own post - be on the lookout for it in September!
FALL IS COMING ... and so are September favorites that I am sure with be about 98% fall themed. I'm excited to see what next month brings into my life!
